Context:

In 1999, the American Folk Art Museum, under the direction of Sylvia Rios (1996-2000), carried out the itinerant exhibition Arte Mapuche (Mapuche Art) in the Bellas Artes Museum of Río de Janeiro, Brazil. The exhibition started on July 27th and was open until July 25th. This exhibition was part of the European Union, Latin America, and Caribbean Summit (EU-LAC). During the exhibition, it was possible to display pieces made by Mapuche artisans famous back then until now, such as Lorenzo Cona, Paula Pilquinao, and Dominga Neculman. This exhibition made it possible to meet these artisans and preserve the production processes they use to create their pieces through photographic and audiovisual records.
