Description:
Photograph in rectangular format and vertical layout. In close-up, the Castillo Hidalgo tower in its façade is surrounded by a small fence and outside herbage. It is a neoclassic castle, which means it highlights classic architectural elements, such as tall columns on the walls and semicircular arches in its design.
Context:
The Hidalgo fort, built in 1816, was turned into a castle due to Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna’s urban reform. This place, which was relinquished by the Santiago council, was the first MAPA headquarter from 1944 to 1981. That way, a university service was born, aiming to exhibit popular art collections and fulfill education and study labors on that matter. While it was operating, it is estimated that every year 50.000 people from Chile and abroad visited it. However, due to the building’s age and lack of maintenance, its collection, which had over 10,000 pieces, was moved on March 2nd, 1981.
