Description:

Photograph in rectangular format and horizontal layout. In a medium shot, Hernán Cordero (apparently), artist and ad-honorem MAPA curator, is sitting holding a silver istipu (stirrup) to label it. On the table are an istipu and a trüpuwe (riding crop or whip) made from the same material arranged randomly next to some glasses. At the back, there is a wooden door. The pieces are part of the MAPA’s Platería Mapuche (Mapuche silver-smithing) collection.

Context:

This collection was shown in the Platería Araucana (Araucanian silver-smithing) exhibition made during the 80s in the Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) from Parque Forestal (MAPA headquarter 1981-1997), in the Organization of American States (OAS) room, located in Washington D.C. and other cities in Chile. Before these exhibitions, the Platería Mapuche collection went through a revision, cataloging, and curating process, on account of its damaged condition, made by academics from the Arts Department of Universidad de Chile. These pictures are part of a project by Julio Tobar (director 1981-1995) to extend the MAPA files.
