Description:

Photograph in rectangular format and vertical layout. In a medium shot, objects from the Mexican collection are standing and hanging on the wall. In close-up, on the left side, it’s the basketwork El guerrillero (The Guerrilla). Two decorative metal horses are at the back, in the upper part. Over them, half of a tin frame with paper garlands in it can be seen. These objects are part of the MAPA collection.

Context:

It might be the first exhibition since the museum opened in 1943. It was made on December 20th, 1944, in Castillo Hidalgo (MAPA headquarter 1944-1981). It exhibited the Mexican collection, selected by Roberto Ayala, folklorist and founder of the Pátzcuaro Museum. The pieces were donated by the governments of Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Cuba on Universidad de Chile’s 100th anniversary. Thanks to this, the museum becomes an institution in the constant service of folk art research under the supervision of Tomás Lago (1943-1968).
