Context:

The Chinese collection was exhibited in October 1960, with the support of the Chilean-Chinese Culture Institute, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Chilean independence. There were 197 works, 59 of which were part of the MAPA collection. In 1957, Tomás Lago (director 1943-1968) traveled to China, picking up impressions and teachings about folk culture from the book Artesanías Clásicas Chinas (Classic Chinese Craftworks) (1963). Under his direction, exhibitions that used to be out of the continent’s range due to current political or cultural bonds were made. Previously, two expositions with objects from this country were carried out in 1953 and 1955.
